Smartphone shipments grew by 50% to 54 million units during the first quarter of 2010 compared with one year ago, analyst firm Strategy Analytics said this week.
The global figure was the strongest period of growth for nearly four years, the company said.
Strategy Analytics director, Tom Kang, said global smartphone shipments accounted for 18% of overall handset volumes.
Sales were driven by strong operator subsidies, competition and a growing number of lower-cost models using software such as Symbian and Android.
Nokia shipped a record 21.5 million smartphones worldwide in quarter one, rising 57% from 13.7 million, giving it 40% global smartphone market share.
Meanwhile, RIM broke into top five manufacturers for the first time ever during the quarter ended 31 March.
The Blackberry maker took its position at the expense of Sony Ericsson, which sold 10.5 million units, compared with RIM's 10.6 million handsets.
Motorola sold 8.5 million phones in the quarter, falling behind Apple, which sold 8.75 million iPhones.
