Denied: Sony Ericsson Unsuccessfully Files for Nexus UI Trademark
Shortly after Google and HTC released the Nexus One, Sony Ericsson came forward to say Google had initially approached them to make the device. SE turned it down on the grounds of not wanting to be a sub-contractor for another company. Of course, SE’s Xperia X10 in many ways pales in comparison to the Nexus One, so maybe it’s for the best they never got their hands on it. Either way, Sony Ericsson has applied for a trademark on a “Nexus UI,” described as being “interface software for mobile devices and software for enhancing user experience.”
The filing was made in both the US and Europe, and has so far been initially blocked in the States. The reason being an existing trademark for “Visual Nexus,” which is similar in more than just the name. It, too, is a trademark for graphical user interface software.
Sony Ericsson may appeal the initial block, but still little is known about what their Nexus UI would be. Could SE have changed their tune and agreed to develop an upcoming phone in Google’s Nexus line? That isn’t happening any time soon, as Google would no doubt be involved in that filing and Motorola already has dibs on the next Nexus device (I have my doubts as to whether one will be released by Google at all). Smartphone shipments grow 50% in Q1
Smartphone shipments grew by 50% to 54 million units during the first quarter of 2010 compared with one year ago, analyst firm Strategy Analytics said this week.
The global figure was the strongest period of growth for nearly four years, the company said.
Strategy Analytics director, Tom Kang, said global smartphone shipments accounted for 18% of overall handset volumes.
Sales were driven by strong operator subsidies, competition and a growing number of lower-cost models using software such as Symbian and Android.
Nokia shipped a record 21.5 million smartphones worldwide in quarter one, rising 57% from 13.7 million, giving it 40% global smartphone market share.
Meanwhile, RIM broke into top five manufacturers for the first time ever during the quarter ended 31 March.
The Blackberry maker took its position at the expense of Sony Ericsson, which sold 10.5 million units, compared with RIM's 10.6 million handsets.
Motorola sold 8.5 million phones in the quarter, falling behind Apple, which sold 8.75 million iPhones.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz review
On last Wednesday, Sony Ericsson introduced more or less a new camera phone called the Sony Ericsson Vivaz. Beside the main feature of phones – calling, this phone can also record videos in High Definition.

I have dealt with Kyocera, Nokia, and Motorola but I never liked them as much as my Sony Ericsson. Why, you ask? It's just the small little details the Sony Ericsson menu is much more detailed and interactive, and lively. It might be a little more up front, but I can say from my firsthand experience that they are very durable and customizable (faceplates and such). They come with USB cables, which mean you can install those java games and applications for free.
Out of the Ericssons, I'll have to say that the w810 is the best mobile phone, as of now. The w810 sports a nifty 2.0 mega-pixel camera, comes in a black or white colour, and has a memory slot so you can upgrade (or downgrade if you are running out of money). It's a durable candy-bar phone, so you don't have to worry about breaking the swivelling or flipping mechanism. The w810 is quite popular around the area I live in, so I guess I'm not alone in this opinion. Of course, the w810 is probably more expensive than your average phone though so get ready to cough a bit of change up ($340 CDN on TigerDirect).
I hope you agree with my decision, but please - by all means, buy with discretion. When I say that, I mean Google around for reviews, videos, and opinion pieces on the w810 just to see if it's right for you. Because if you're like me and want a phone that sticks out, the w810 is not the one for you. But hopefully you're not as picky as I am.
